Computing a Grade Point Average (gpa)

To compute a grade point average, determine the total number of “Letter Graded credit hours”.  Then determine the Grade Points earned for each course (number of credit hours multiplied by the Grade Point value for that Letter grade).  Next, add up the grade points earned for each course.  Finally, divide the total number of grade points earned by the total number of “letter grade credit hours”.

Computing a Grade Point Average

Graphic showing how a Grade Point Average is computed. Steps are explained in body test

  1. Determine the number of Grade Points Earned for each course. Formula:  (number of credit hours for the course) x (Grade Point Value for the Letter Grade)
  2. Find the total number of Letter Graded Credit Hours
  3. Divide the Total Grade Points Earned by the Total Number of Credit hours.  Ex: 56.35 / 26.0 = 2.17gpa
