American Association of University Women 2012 Scholarships and Loans for Individuals and Projects in Western New York

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo Branch of the American Association of University Women is pleased to announce it is accepting applications for its loans and scholarships for 2012.  The Buffalo Branch of AAUW administers both interest-free loans and scholarship funds for students in the eight counties of Western New York.  Funds for educational loans, grants and scholarships are raised through the branches annual Scholarship Book Sale and by generous donors.

2012 Grants, Loans and Scholarships include:

  • Chamberlin Loans and Funds for Education; Interest-free loans and grants.
  • Velma Cobb Scholarships; for graduating high school seniors.
  • Olga Lindberg Scholarships; for 4th year college students or graduate students.
  • Grassroots Grants Program; for high school leadership projects, community organizations or individual projects.
  • Dorothy Payne Urban Public High School Grant; for urban public high school seniors
  • Dorothy Payne STEM Grants (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics); for students working on an associate’s degree or beyond.
  • Catalyst for Change: For high school seniors, college juniors or graduate students, based on potential or actual activist accomplishments.

AAUW is one of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women.  The organization works to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.  The Buffalo Branch of AAUW, founded in 1890, is composed of women leaders from the arts , business, education, government, law medicine, science and technology.

The Catalyst for Change Scholarship will be awarded to students who have demonstrated success in a grassroots effort that has effected positive change for women or girls.


  • The scholarship award amount will be $3,000 each for three winners (one in each of three categories) for a total of $9,000.
  • Categories are: female high school senior; female college junior; female graduate student.
  • Applicant must be attending (full time) any accredited college (two year or four year) the following fall.
  • Applicants must be residing in or attending school in Western New York.
  • Applicant must complete an application.
  • Applicant must submit two letters of support.
  • Applicant must complete a 500-750 word essay.
  • Applicant must obtain an official high school or college transcript forwarded by the school.
  • Applications and supporting documents must be received by February 1, 2012.
  • Applications must be typed or computer generated. Handwritten or incomplete applications will not be considered.
